At the heart of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, is a place that students with various disabilities call 'home' - the UWI-Mona Lions Centre for Students with Special Needs.
A recent study on primary and secondary level schools has confirmed what many already suspect, that most schools do not have the facilities to accommodate students with disabilities (SWDs) nor do most teachers have the specialist training required to relate to them.
FIVE STUDENTS WITH disabilities will be awarded bursaries starting in September, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of The UWI, Mona Campus Professor Archibald McDonald said. He was speaking at the recent Regional Disability Studies Conference staged by The UWI Centre for Disability Studies (CDS).
The bursaries each valued at $50,000 will be awarded every academic year through the CDS to students who have maintained a B average in their studies.
